Why isn't water used in transformer, generator and panel rooms? The logic of gas-based and automatic suppression systems.
Electrical transformers, generator and panel rooms are high-risk areas that must be thought of differently from ordinary spaces. The wrong suppression method here can make the danger worse. How is fire safety in transformer and electrical rooms ensured? In short: with gas-based and automatic systems rather than water.
Why isn't water used?
Because water conducts electricity, suppressing with water in areas with energised electrical equipment is both dangerous and harmful to the devices. That is why non-conductive suppression methods are preferred in transformer, generator and panel/server rooms.
Gas suppression systems
These areas generally use clean agent (e.g. FM-200-type) or CO₂-based gas suppression. The gas extinguishes by reducing the oxygen in the environment or by cutting the combustion reaction; it leaves no conductive residue and does not harm sensitive equipment. [CONFIRM: the suitable system type is chosen according to the conditions of the area]
Automatic detection and discharge
Since these rooms are often empty, it is essential that the system works automatically. When the fire detection panel detects smoke/heat, the suppression gas is discharged automatically; manual discharge is also possible when needed. This way the fire is suppressed at its source even if no one can intervene.
How is the right system determined?
- The volume of the room and the equipment inside
- Ventilation and door sealing
- Risk level and continuity need
Based on these factors, the gas type, quantity and detection layout are engineered; the system is tested after installation.
Installation and maintenance
Gas-based and automatic suppression systems should be handled as a whole — installation, commissioning and periodic inspection. In our transformer and system suppression service we engineer, install and maintain these solutions.
